Icona Pop, the female electro-pop duo from Sweden, performed for the CMJ Music Marathon at Santos Party House last night in Chinatown, NYC. They closed out the dance den at 1AM following Lovelife, Citizens!, Strange Talk and Morning Parade for the Neon Gold Records showcase.

Best friends Aino Jawo and Caroline Hjelt appeared on stage in feathers, studs and leather setting the tone for what was going to be an explosive performance. Bass line vibrations shook the entire venue as the girls actively mixed beats and sang their hearts out.

Caroline took the performance to another level by enticing the crowd with wireless digital red and green glowing sticks. The sticks functioned similar to a theremin (an early electronic instrument that could be controlled without physical contact). She virtually drummed the sticks as they produced live sounds without pushing any buttons. Pretty sweet.

Performing in a familiar club was comforting for the girls, whose last gig in New York just happened to be at Santos.

They made themselves at home as they sipped cans of soda and began undressing on stage, while Caroline said she had been longing to come back and play here ever since they left the states.

The girls formed Icona Pop just two years ago and were first picked up for their 2010 single, “Manners.” The single was sampled a year later on Chiddy Bang‘s “Mind Your Manners,” song which was featured on Chiddy Bang’s album, “Breakfast.” The song received positive feedback as it reached #19 on the Billboard’s Heatseeker’s Chart.

A year later, Icona Pop released their first EP, Nights Like This, which included a collaboration with The Knocks, another electro duo on the track “Sun Goes Down.”

And even if you don’t instantly recognize Icona Pop just from their name, you have definitely had their catchy feel-good song, “I Love It,” stuck in your head for hours on end.

The single off their recently released sophomore extended play album entitled, Iconic EP is featured in the Lenovo Yoga Multimode Ultrabook commercial.

Aino introduced the track to the crowd by saying, “I wanna thank the guy who broke my heart. I love it!” There was absolute pandemonium as the bass dropped and they transitioned into their hit track and the girls were all over the stage as they entertained the crowd with incredible energy and enthusiasm.

Icona Pop is the absolute epitome of the Electropop genre with their heart pulsing, head banging tracks that you just want to dance to and scream at the top of your lungs…

“I LOVE IT!”

Consider this just the beginning for Aino and Caroline, who will be releasing their debut album in 2013.
